In Memorium

Dick (Richard J.) Studier passed away on December 23rd, 2011 after a lengthy illness. Dick described his condition in the online rollcall as: “I have been involuntarily retired due to several different types of illness since March 2004. Started with a 3 month stay in the hospital with extreme lung infections and 6 more months of skilled nursing in the hospital - never really recovered. Several operations and problems since. Am on the mend finally and hope to be in good shape by our reunion!”

The last part of his statement shows his love of Culver and indeed he had made arrangements to be at the 50th reunion. Some members of Company C plan to have an informal service at the “ring” in honor of Dick. Dick was also a fifth classman.

Again from the online rollcall, Dick graduated from Vincennes University in 1966 with an AD in Business Administration and then graduated from Ohio Northern University in 1968 with a BS in Business.

He started his life after college teaching in a nice rural school system in middle Ohio. He taught all business courses, and coached basketball and football where he went undefeated for 2 years in basketball.

Dick then went back to the family business (killing bugs) in 1973 and spent the next 40 years doing this. Currently his oldest son now runs the business.

Dick had many fond memories as reflected online and his family tells us that his favorite photo was of him passing through the Iron Gate. He remembered the “greats” of the Academy during that time and the not so great remembrance of Doug Neumann’s split pants covering the entire door to his room.

It is good that we have his reflections from his online rollcall and especially his statement: “My personal feeling is that Culver was the best thing ever happened to me, educationally and friendship wise, especially J.D. Smith.”

Dick was preceded in death by his parents and leaves two sons: Matthew and Christopher, a granddaughter, Mackenzie, a brother Robert (CMA ’65), a former wife, Michelle, and a good friend,Pamela. Services were on December 29th.
