History
Andy Malcolm published our first class newsletter ("Volume 1, No.1" a/k/a "LOTS OF NEWS") about 6 months after graduation in January 1963. In 2020, while doing some long overdue house cleaning, Craig Duchossois discovered "Vol 3 (A Record!)" (a/k/a "SUMMORE"). Though not explicitly dated, it appears to be from sometime in 1965. That find certainly implies there was an "Vol 2" ... however, no one (let alone Andy) seems to have come across a copy. If you find a copy, please send it to your webmaster!
The next "volume" was not done until shortly after our 45th Reunion (by Joe Schluchter in 2007). That was followed a few months later by Greg Gazda picking up the mantle of "Newsletter Editor". Following our 50th Reunion (2012), Greg relinquished the duties to Lou Desenberg, with Brad Laycock in a supporting role. Then, after our 55th Reunion in 2017, Dan Baker joined the newsletter team. As Lou wished to take a less active role, Dan stepped up to be the Editor-in-Chief, with Lou and Brad still contributing. In addition, John Davis began inserting himself in the process as proof reader, grammarian, and Oxford-comma aficionado ... plus authoring an anonymous article or two every so often.
Among the more interesting topics that Dan brought to the newsletter was a series of articles "On the Subject of Mortality". Obviously, a bit of a grim subject, but certainly appropriate for consideration in light of the advancing age of our classmates. These four articles were combined into a single file, which can be downloaded using this link.
Over the years, several staff members from the Academy have been particularly helpful in providing Academy-related content for the newsletter as well as formatting and distributing it; specifically: Sandy Lewandowski, Sam Alameda, and Amy Davis Johnson … all under the guidance of Alan Loehr, Director of Alumni Relations.
Most recently, Academy support has come from Anne Kelley (the new Director of Alumni Engagement) and Amber Payne (her Office Manager).
