In Memorium
James Sales Love, age 60, died at home Friday, Nov. 26, 2004, after a courageous three-year battle with complications of cholangiocarcinoma. Born in Anderson, Indiana, February 20, 1944, Jim attended Lapel (IN) High School and Culver (IN) Military Academy from which he graduated in 1962.
He served in the U.S. Army and received an honorable discharge. Jim received his B.S. with honors from the University of Washington. During his undergraduate career, he worked as a lab technician in several area hospitals, a seasonal National Park Service ranger, and an emergency room technician. He worked eight years as a paramedic with King County Medic One, during which time he also completed the Medex Physician Assistant Program at the University of Washington. In addition, Jim worked with Seattle Mountain Rescue, as a volunteer firefighter, and served until his death as an active member of the Seattle Indian Health Board.
Dedication to patient care and continual learning were basic to Jim's life. Starting in 1980, he worked as a Physician Assistant on the North Slope oil fields of Alaska and in Anchorage, Alaska, then at Hurley Medical Center in Flint, MI. He returned to Seattle to work in Neurological Surgery at the University of Washington, cared for inner-city patients at the Pioneer Square Clinic, worked in emergency medicine at Valley Medical Center in Renton, did family practice with Valley Family Care Residency Program, and with the Multi-care Medical Group in Urology, Neuro-Urology, and Family Practice.
Jim took great pride in his achievement of Eagle Scout rank in the Boy Scouts and his experience as an Indian dancer. Although his great love was medicine, his passions included his love for family and friends, gardening, landscaping, wood-working, photography, and camping. Family and community ties were very important to him. Married for 35 years, Jim is survived by his wife Carolyn (Farmer) Love and daughters Jennifer Suzanne and Rebecca Eileen, of Seattle, and his mother, Norma Eileen (Sales) Love, sisters Tonya (Love) Lucas and Tamara (Love) Everett and brother, Calvin Bennett, all of Indiana, eight nephews and seven nieces. His father, Ward N. Love, and brother John Bennett preceded him in death. A memorial was held at the Mountaineers Building, Seattle. A memorial was also held on the family farm in Anderson, Indiana, Saturday July 2, 2005.
